West Coast Distribution Manager

Nathan James is looking for a West Coast Distribution Manager to join our team in providing the best product availability and delivery service for our customers.

We are a design-first, home furnishing company focusing on the habits of urban dwellers and first time home buyers. We pride ourselves on the best in class customer happiness, providing the highest possible quality products that are affordable for the majority and assembly that isn’t dreadful.

You’ll be responsible for overseeing and managing our current and future west coast distribution services for Nathan James. You will be an essential piece to the daily operations as our only on-site team member at our west coast third party fulfillment center. While our current operation requires you to work extremely closely with our third parties and the systems they have in place; you have the ability to design, setup and manage a continually improving distribution center. This involves assisting in process establishment/documentation, hiring and managing a full time staff, complete facility resource management, as well as continuing to push our capabilities to handle services that we’re currently unable to provide to our customers and other divisions within Nathan James.

A deep understanding of factory physics, specifically warehouse management and resource management is a requirement for this role. Having managed a fulfillment center and understanding the complexities involved with all types of ship out methods (small parcel, LTL, TL, transfers, etc.) is must have experience as well. Managing both an internal team and external partners at various times within Nathan James’ operational plans also requires the ability to provide support from multiple perspectives regarding any aspect related to operational processes.  You will be the go to expert in bridging the gap between Nathan James’ ERP system and any WMS system we are using (whether that be an internal or 3rd party WMS).

During training, you’ll be expected to be proactive in your process and learn quickly. Once fully up-to-speed (2 months), you’ll have a complete understanding and ownership of daily metrics that will give us insight into our capabilities on the west coast. You will be constantly in tune with the fulfillment industry within our area of operation (currently inland empire, TBD future) providing insight into what we can expect up to 6 months in advance. As soon as you are comfortably in control with our current operation, you will then be expected to begin thinking about our future development for west coast distribution.

We have a rhythm to our work and a very low turnover rate — we have yet to have a single team member opt out. Your voice matters to us. We make change from fresh perspectives and appreciate new viewpoints, so you should feel comfortable speaking up about your values and goals.

We’re ready for the ongoing work that goes into building an inclusive, supportive place for you to do the best work of your career. Our values, workplace and our benefits are designed to support a sustainable, healthy relationship with your work. Our operating values provide the framework we use in building a healthy, resilient organization.

You can expect a mindful onboarding process with ramp-up and time to learn. You can expect a team that listens, and to be heard. You can expect to give and provide direct feedback. You can expect to work with good people. You can expect to be counted on. You can expect to do your best work and build a career here.

We’re looking for someone with the ability to work in an agile environment by being proactive, flexible, efficient and task-focused. This means being a great problem-solver and having the technical strengths to find solutions while correcting unforeseen issues extremely quickly. You enjoy leading a team and believe the best way to do that is by establishing, recording and training on standard processes for repeatable tasks; while leading the team through example when troubleshooting or learning new processes. You have a strong team mentality and ability to not only do what is asked, but to do what you believe is needed.

You can attribute most of what you love about the projects and tasks you work on to having an element of problem solving. Running an organized and calm distribution center is a point of pride and brings joy to your work life. Logistics has always been an area of interest to you because you enjoy the challenges involved when continually fine-tuning processes and you welcome new challenges that seem to occur in a field with so many moving parts.

A minimum of three years experience in managing a team within warehousing and distribution is required. Advanced understanding and experience with warehouse management systems is a plus. The ideal candidate would have extensive experience working and communicating with many different LTL freight and small parcel carriers as well as working with Amazon and other e-commerce retailer companies.

For this role, please note that our current 3PL is in the Inland Empire region of southern California.  Regular on-site visits (daily) will be required while we continue to work with a 3PL, to provide assistance for both 1st and 2nd shift (depending on the day).

Our benefits are all aimed at supporting a life well lived both at work and away from work. We’re all about reasonable working hours, sharing, ample vacation time, wellness, education, comfort, and giving back.

We offer competitive salaries, we measure this as your pay being competitive for a similar role in the country you will be working from.

Please submit an application here that speaks directly to this position. There are no right answers or cookie-cutter expectations. A cover letter is not required, but those that clearly demonstrate how Nathan James would be a great fit for you and how you would be a great fit for us, will be given full attention and are highly appreciated.

We expect to take two weeks to review all applications. You’ll hear from us about advancement to a work sample review. You’ll get a chance to see the types of challenges you would be solving in this role. Then on to an interview.  Our interviews are all remote by Whereby video chat (no software needed), with your future colleagues, on your schedule.

We appreciate your consideration in having Nathan James be part of your career.

Our open conversation starts with this post. We look forward to hearing from you.
